Your Very Own Capital Campaign -- Part 1
Before The Beginning
Capital Campaigns are sometimes referred to as "Bricks And Mortar" campaigns. They can be very exciting and energizing for any nonprofit group. It can really charge your supporters and donors into standing with you during one of your greatest undertakings.
Perhaps your capital campaign undertaking is to build an endowment fund, build that much needed new facility, build on to an existing structure, enhance your current operations, provide that singular community service, or a combination of all of these. Either way, the capital campaign is often the best means to achieve a large fundraising goal.
Capital Campaigns usually start at raising a minimum of $500,000 and up into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Bringing the community together like never before on your behalf will be your biggest challenge in achieving your dreams using the successful capital campaign. It will take unified perseverance and a solid determination by the Board Of Directors and staff to be successful.
Anything less than a unified and determined effort will show donors that you are not in serious need of their support. If your group has some unresolved reservations or plan to offer a weak effort to achieve your goals, donors will certainly take notice.
The Board Of Directors must also be involved solidly as a donor and as an active volunteer.
The ultimate outcome will also be achieved through the direction of a knowledgeable fundraising consultant or by a seasoned and determined staff member.
THE BEGINNING – Asking The Hard Questions
The ideal capital campaign is easily achieved with a solid plan and structured implementation. To create and implement your CAPITAL CAMPAIGN fundraising strategy plan we must start at the beginning..
You must ask yourselves some very tough questions and agree to not enter into a capital campaign lightly.
It is best to start by corporately asking your group the following questions:
1. Do we have a long range plan? Why not?
2. Do we have a short range/long range goal? What is it?
3. Why is there a need to increase the funding base through a capital campaign?
4. Is there a need for an outside consultant or specialist to achieve our goal?
Once these questions are answered, then you can proceed to the next step in identifying a Capital Campaign fundraising program that will meet the particular needs and goals of your nonprofit organization.
